Colloid Chemistry
The Colloid and Advanced Materials Group at the Department of Chemistry, Minia University is concerned with surfactant, colloid and surface and interface chemistry of a wide range of systems, particularly those associated with applications of surfactants and solid nanoparticles in various areas. Fundamental research will help in generating new data on the surface and interfacial properties of surfactants and colloids which supports their use in current and new applications. Training and researcher development, including publication preparation, international conference presentation, data analysis, seminars, workshops, information retrieval and specialist method training, are very strongly supported and encouraged through continuous review and discussion of progress in all projects.

What is a Surfactant?
It is a shortened term of "surface-active agent", which forms a unique class of organic compounds that lower the surface tension of a liquid, the interfacial tension between two liquids, or that between a liquid and a solid. Surfactants may act as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents, and dispersants due to their dual "amphiphilic" character. The "amphiphile" is a term describing a chemical compound possessing both hydrophilic (water-loving, polar) and lipophilic (oil-loving) properties. A surfactant consists of a hydrophobic tail portion, usually a long-chain hydrocarbon, and a hydrophilic polar head group, which is often ionic. It tends to dissolve in both aqueous and oil phase and to locate at the oil-water interface. These properties in turn lead to a vast array of practical application areas of surfactants which are illustrated in terms of mineral and petroleum processing, biological systems, health and personal care products, foods, medicine and pharmaceuticals, and crop protection. Over the past decade, new surfactant molecules have been appearing at a relatively rapid rate. This growth in surfactant synthesis has led to the establishment of new surfactant technologies to a diverse range of disciplines and new applications (such as nanoparticle synthesis and more diverse and environmentally friendly consumer products).
